WHAT TO DO……. if your puppy has Low Blood Sugar
If your puppy is conscious, give him/her a little Karo Syrup, or Honey under its tongue, or
rubbed on its gums. Do NOT pour into the mouth as the puppy could easily choke.
You can also mix Light Karo syrup or honey with pedialyte or water, stir to dissolve, and dribble it into the puppy’s mouth. Having a 3cc. syringe around will come in handy during this time also.
Nutri-cal also works extremely well in an emergency. Nutri-Cal is good to keep around and some owners choose to give their babe Nutri-Cal on a daily basis until they are six months of age. When pups are little and they start playing around, they forget to eat at times and this is when a Hypoglycemia attack can occur. Nutri-Cal stimulates the appetite as well, therefore promoting healthy eating.
The puppy should begin to improve in about ten minutes, if not, contact your vet as quickly as you can. He/she will probably will have a bit of a chill afterwards so keep him/her warm. After this episode, your puppy will probably feel sluggish and he/she will want to sleep a bit also, this could last for up to a day.
Even if your puppy recovers from an episode like this it is important to have your vet check him/her to make sure that there is not some underlying cause that is serious. There are some serious problems that can cause hypoglycemic episodes and you would not want to take a chance with your friends life. Only your vet can reassure you on the cause.
If your puppy is prone to low blood sugar offer him a bowl of sugar
water and a bowl of regular water and he will learn to use the sugar water when he isn't feeling well! Also remember to leave his dry food out at all times!
IMPORTANT! Your Puppy Should NEVER Miss A Meal!
